Canadian-born singer Kat Valerie met NZ-born musician/producer Matt Cumming (AKA Max Luther) 7 years ago in a seedy back-street Melbourne bar — both seeing a mutual friend rock it out to an audience of 5. The conversation began around the emotions of music and raw expression and has never stopped since then. The heat and beats of two lovers making music finally gave birth to their debut album this year — “Neon Scientist”. Check it out. Drink it up.
“Staark is a little word, used to describe an emotional reaction to colour… its like trying to tag something uncontainable… We fell across ‘staark’ whilst hunting for our own description – we fell in love with it when we realised that pronounced this way, in German, means ‘strong!’. It has such a sense of duplicity about it — much like us and our music.” —Kat Valerie
Staark crafts electro-pop songs that fall further from the candy-pop end of this eclectic genre and could still stand up on their own (without their beloved beats, programming and orchestration). They write songs, in part, to help process this personal trip called life and because they say they need to create — they want to share and connect with others… simple, human tendancies – the ‘stuff’ within us all.
